Website For Aquarium Filtration
An aquarium filter is a very critical component every aquarium, important in keeping both freshwater and marine fishes. Keeping a filter in your aquarium removes soluble chemicals, physical dirt, and other waste products from the water. Just imagine you living in a house, or simply staying in your bedroom, and it is left not cleaned for weeks! Do you think you can endure another day in bed knowing that your sheets stink, your mountain of a laundry pile in one corner, and dust bunnies are growing bigger under your bed? Just imagine what fishes feel.
Aquarium filters are available in many types, many forms, different price ranges. This article will help you find which filter is fit for your aquarium.
With the use of a filter more fish can be kept in an aquarium. These items are designed to clean the water of solid and dissolved pollutants. Aquarium filters do this through a series of processes described as mechanical, chemical and biological filtration.
Not every filter uses all of these filtration methods but many will. Ultimately it comes down to the type of filter media that is used. If a particular fish filter can house a range of medias then you can fill it to complete all three methods of filtration.
External filters are one type. External filters work by removing water from the aquarium, pushing it to a series of filtering and cleansing materials before releasing the water back again into the aquarium. External filters are commonly used because they are relatively easier to use, easier to keep and maintain compared to internal filters. Studies also show that since they are located outside, external filters are more effective.
There are also canister filters. Canister filters are the ones that you can see placed at the back of an aquarium. There are also external, but comes in a more canister-like shape. Because of the shape and size, canister filters contain more filtering media. More cleaning and filtering materials are used and therefore provide a cleaner aquarium for fishes. It works by allowing the aquarium water enter the canister. The water then passes the filter materials present inside the canister and is circulated around – from the top of the canister then the bottom – before the water is pumped back to the aquarium, free from dirt and other pollutants. Basically, the main advantage of a canister filter against your normal external filter is the size, the ability to carry a higher volume of materials that can thoroughly cleanse and filter the water, all without taking too much space inside the aquarium. Another advantage of external filters is that you can easily detach them from the aquarium for cleaning and maintenance purposes without doing anything/disturbing the aquarium.
On the other hand, there are internal filters. From the name itself, internal filters are filters found inside the aquarium. Internal filters include under gravel filters, sponge filters, foam filters, and many more.
Now that you know the types, here are some tips on choosing the filters. Always keep in mind that when choosing an under gravel filter, be sure to choose the one that is big enough to cover the base of your aquarium. It is important that the under gravel filter is the same size as the base of your aquarium, so that it can cover a large area to filter more water. Also, aside form considering the different types of aquarium filters out there and the one you like most, think about your budget as well. Remember that you can always upgrade anytime in the future.
